We warmly welcome you on a virtual tour of “Personal and Precious. Chinese Tankards and Mugs from the Sapientia Collection” on shown at Medeiros and Almeida Museum in Lisbon until 25 March 2023.
The exhibition opened on 26 November and was part of the three-day conference “Asian Art in the World. Historical Influences on Culture and Society”, an event gathering scholars, professionals and collectors from all over the world.
The opening was followed by the launch of the book A Thousand Auspicious Meanings: Chinese Porcelain Teapots from the Sapientia Collection for the Domestic Market by Pauline Ngai. The Ambassador of Italy to Portugal, Mr. Carlo Formosa, attended the book launch.
The 300 porcelain mugs from China are part of Sapientia broader collection of Chinese porcelain from Ming and Qing dynasties. In Lisbon, they are exhibited for the first time according to a curatorial discourse that presents the history of this curious typology and develops aspects of its production and its varied forms and decorative themes.
The exhibition includes a spectacular mural-installation of mugs, in a creative touch and approach to a contemporary discourse, inspired by the 'Porcelain Rooms' of the 17th and 18th centuries.
Sapientia Foundation’s vision is to contribute to cultural exchanges, research and education.
A private museum, house to the Sapientia Collection, is expected to open in Wong Chuk Hang (Hong Kong) by the end of 2023.
Best regards,
Sapientia Foundation
