June 2nd is a very important date in Italy: it's the day of the Italian Republic. At the Italian International Nursery and Kindergarten we celebrated with many exciting activities: the children discovered more about the Italian Republic's history and about its symbols, such as the Italian National flag and anthem. To mark the occasion, we also decided to pay tribute to the famous Italian sculptor Antonio Canova: 2022 Is the bicentenary of his death and many Italian institutions are celebrating the genius of his work. Our students participated in a virtual visit to the Antonio Canova House and Museum in Italy, they listened to a mesmerising story about the significance of statues, told through the eyes of a butterfly observing Canova’s work and they made their own clay statues. Finally, they played a game that is an all-time favourite of Italian children, “Le Belle Statuine” [The Beautiful Statues], freezing in place just like some of Canova’s artworks.
